Are Bat Grips Necessary?

If you’re new to the baseball world, you might not know about all the great pieces of equipment that can really improve how you play the game. Of course, you need a ball, gloves and a bat to play baseball, but have you ever heard of bat grips? Bat grips are a great way to improve your grip on the bat and they help to make it more comfortable. After all, no one wants the bat slipping out of their hands – it’s downright dangerous. It can also be uncomfortable to hit a ball with the bat if you don’t have grips to absorb some of the vibrations. Though grips might not be as talked about as the bat, ball and glove, they can be just as important. You might be wondering, though, are they really necessary? Let’s talk more about it.

It Depends on the Bat

So, is bat grip tape truly necessary? Well, it really depends on the bat type. For example, if you’re playing with a metal bat, you do need bat grips. You see, metal bats are super slippery. They also tend to vibrate a lot when they hit a ball. So, having grips installed to keep the bat in your hands while you’re batting is essential. The grips have the added benefit of helping absorb some of the shock and vibrations when hitting the ball. Without grips, you’ll probably have sore hands from the energy transfer, or you could have the bat slip altogether.

If you’re playing with a wooden bat, it’s a little different. You might be able to play a bit without grips, but not comfortably. Eventually the bat might slip from your hands. While not as slippery as metal, grips are still pretty important when it comes to a wooden bat, too.

The Benefits of Playing with Grips

There are many reasons why playing baseball while using a batting grip can be beneficial. The biggest advantage of using them, though? You can grip the bat better and therefore hit with much more power and confidence. The grips help you keep hold of the bat. You don’t want to have the bat slipping around or even flying out of your hands while you’re trying to hit the ball. It will also help your hands hurt less. When you are constantly hitting a ball with the bat, it stings. So, if this is something that bothers you, a mid to thicker grip might be a great fit for you.

Besides helping with your comfort and swing, bat grips also look awesome and come in so many different patterns and colors. If you get Lizard Skins custom bat grips, you can get grips with your team colors, an MLB team’s colors or just your favorite color/pattern. You can also add your name, number or team name to really personalize your bat. So, it can also add a cool look and feel to your bat.
